The deep hummed with the slow songs of the sea,
each current carrying whispers of stories past.
Two great whales drifted beneath the ice-laden waves,
their voices rolling in deep, resonant tones.

“Do you know of the land-walkers who came here once?”
asked the elder whale, his voice a ripple through the water.
The younger one flicked her tail, sending a stream of bubbles upward.
“Many have come, many have gone. But I sense you speak of a tale worth telling.”

“Ah, yes,” the elder murmured. “A tale of struggle, of ice,
of those who dared to race where no fin could guide them.”
The younger whale listened as the elder sang of the land-walkers
who arrived on a ship of wood and iron, calling themselves explorers.

They sought to reach the heart of the frozen world,
to claim a place of honor among their kind. But they were not alone in their quest
—another group, sleek and swift like orcas on the hunt, had already beaten them to their prize.
When the slower ones arrived, they found only a flag, fluttering lifelessly in the wind.

“And what then?” the younger whale asked.
The elder’s song deepened, heavy with sorrow.
“They turned back, but the ice had already decided their fate.
The cold took them, one by one, until only silence remained.”

A pause, filled only by the quiet creak of the frozen world above.
“Did no one come for them?” the younger finally asked.
“Oh, they were found,” the elder replied. “Their words remained,
scratched into thin sheets, telling of their final days.

Their leader’s last message was not of anger, nor regret, but a plea
—’Look after our people.’ Even in the end, they thought of those they left behind.”
The younger whale exhaled a plume of mist. “A sad story.”
“A true one,” the elder corrected. “And in the deep, the truth matters.”

With that, they drifted on, their songs mingling with the endless voice of the sea.
